How to connect with grandparents across the miles (plus Panasonic HomeTeam™ $100 giveaway!)

My kids live 3,000 miles from one set of grandparents and 2,000 miles from the other. As you can imagine, visits are all too infrequent and phone calls with little kids (aged 7, 3, and 5 months) just don't cut it, but I really want to keep my kids connected to our extended families.

That's why I jumped at the chance to review Panasonic's new HomeTeam™ app. It's a video chat specifically geared toward the grands, both older and younger. You can read books, play games, and make family connections, no journey needed.

Who here has hosted stiflingly awkward video chats between your kids and your parents or in-laws? Depending on the age levels of the littles, so much can happen. Staring. Screaming. Racing around the room like a hooligan. Interrupting every word Grandma says to show off another amazing toy. Saying inappropriate things. Thinking it's oh-so-funny to cover up the webcam with a well-placed finger. Toddling off in boredom. {Raises hand for all of the above.}

HomeTeam is here to help us out, guys. It relieves all the "but what do I do?" anxiety around video chatting between grandparents and little kids. Because it's not just video chat — it's video chat and then some! You can read books together and play child-friendly games. You finally have something just perfect for building those bridges between the generations, giving them something to do together and lending a natural flow to the conversation. Kids will remember Grandpa next time he comes to visit as the guy who plays checkers and Nana as the person who reads them all those wonderful stories.

First off, the app boasts a pleasing and simple interface with just a few well-chosen options. Once you're connected to your loved one, their dear face fills the screen, and you can see and hear each other as you visit.

One of the first things my kids requested was for Nana to read them a book. It's a read-aloud time just as if you were close together. We chose a charming and humorous story about learning not to be a hog. It even included a seamless little lesson in rhymes and critical thinking. The library includes all sorts of titles, from classics like Curious George to the latest popular series to educational nonfiction options. The reader-out-louder can control the page flipping, and either party can access the zoom options independently, which is helpful for anyone with limited vision or using a small screen.

We then tried out several fun games, like this Curious George matching game. There are the classics like chess and tic-tac-toe plus new and exclusive games, all perfect for young kids. The grandparent and child go back and forth, with each person's screen becoming active in turn.

If you have more than one kid, as I do, ours were able to take turns with each other in each of the games as well, giving both of them practice with the learning involved. Oh, yes — learning. As a homeschooling parent, I'm always in tune with opportunities for education. Games and books like the ones on HomeTeam build logic, memory, math, language, and more, all with the kids not even noticing!

On a very practical level, kids are getting so good at computers and smartphones and such nowadays, right? I love that HomeTeam provides a safe and engaging place for them to practice those emerging and crucial skills. For instance, I had no idea my 3-year-old had gotten so good with a mouse trackpad!

HomeTeam offers such an enjoyable way to snuggle up and feel close to a grandparent, even over a distance.

The app is available cross-platform and should be simple enough to download and install (which is essential when you're dealing with a cross-generational app, right?). Then you just register, search for your family members, and add them as connections. When you're both available, give someone a call, and you'll soon be seeing and hearing each other across the miles.

Buy it!

Featured content on HomeTeam includes Curious George, This or That?, Jumanji, Martha Speaks, 5 Little Monkeys, and more. New users can try out the entire HomeTeam experience with unlimited access to all content for 30 days. After that, a premium subscription is available for $8.99 a month or $89.99 a year.

HomeTeam is available for download in the App Store and Google Play, so check it out!

This sounds so cool!! I am super excited about the reading feature; my son loves to read, and his grandparents love to read to him (especially the grandma who is a children's librarian!); how cool would it be for them to be able to read together, and be able to see the book together in real time, even when they're not able to come visit us in person? I am also interested to find out how user-friendly it is, even for grandparents who are not... technologically savvy, like my own father. We don't get to visit with him often, and I am excited about the idea of them still getting to interact face-to-face.

My email address is hjgscudero {at} gmail {dot} com.
