We hadn't been in awhile, so it made for an interesting unschooling day.

Alrik busted some moves on the dance floor.
![Wordless Wednesday: Science & lapdesks == Hobo Mama boy tugging rope pulley - pacific science center outing seattle unschooling](http://images.hobomama.com/IMG_7925_zpsd6de5bab.jpg)
Mikko investigated all the pulleys.
![Wordless Wednesday: Science & lapdesks == Hobo Mama pushing buttons - pacific science center outing seattle unschooling](http://images.hobomama.com/IMG_7932_zps54d82e14.jpg)
And both of them pushed lots of buttons.

The toddler room was a hit.

Alrik was very pleased with his experience on the slides.
![Wordless Wednesday: Science & lapdesks == Hobo Mama sliding into a brother - pacific science center outing seattle unschooling](http://images.hobomama.com/IMG_7953_zps9c38dba4.jpg)
Even when it meant sliding into his brother.
![Wordless Wednesday: Science & lapdesks == Hobo Mama flying a helicopter in the kids' room - pacific science center outing seattle unschooling](http://images.hobomama.com/IMG_7933_zps047403af.jpg)
Mikko flew a helicopter …
![Wordless Wednesday: Science & lapdesks == Hobo Mama boy sticking out his tongue in play structure - pacific science center outing seattle unschooling](http://images.hobomama.com/IMG_7956_zpsf216f51f.jpg)
… but wasn't much into posing.
![Wordless Wednesday: Science & lapdesks == Hobo Mama toddler checking out fountain in butterfly house - pacific science center outing seattle unschooling](http://images.hobomama.com/IMG_7965_zps1da4f767.jpg)
Alrik was fascinated with the Butterfly House.
![Wordless Wednesday: Science & lapdesks == Hobo Mama butterflies eating rotting fruit on plate at butterfly house - pacific science center outing seattle unschooling](http://images.hobomama.com/IMG_7970_zps430ead45.jpg)
Mmm … rotting fruit! But I couldn't get many good picture of butterflies because of …
![Wordless Wednesday: Science & lapdesks == Hobo Mama boy scared of butterflies - pacific science center outing seattle unschooling](http://images.hobomama.com/IMG_7967_zpsa3bd614a.jpg)
… this guy. He was afraid one would land on him and wanted to hightail it out of there.

So I watched while the kiddos put together giant puzzles.

They would have stayed forever,
but by this time my back was killing me for some reason.
![Wordless Wednesday: Science & lapdesks == Hobo Mama baby in giant guitar - pacific science center outing seattle unschooling](http://images.hobomama.com/IMG_7962_zps471705f8.jpg)
So we headed off for a last look around,
which meant putting the baby in a giant guitar, of course.
![Wordless Wednesday: Science & lapdesks == Hobo Mama boy looking chill - pacific science center outing seattle unschooling](http://images.hobomama.com/IMG_7974_zpsb98c1cc4.jpg)
Here's Lord Byron looking insouciant after one of his poetry readings.
(Mikko's been considering a haircut, so enjoy the flowing locks while you can….)
![Wordless Wednesday: Science & lapdesks == Hobo Mama pushing a chair around the armory - pacific science center outing seattle unschooling](http://images.hobomama.com/IMAG0131_zps0d402319.jpg)
My camera's battery died, so I snapped some phone pics
when we headed over for a snack at The Armory.
That is, Mikko and I snacked, and Alrik helped the staff arrange the chairs.
(It's nice they have him.)
![Wordless Wednesday: Science & lapdesks == Hobo Mama brother sitting on lap at the armory - pacific science center outing seattle unschooling brothers](http://images.hobomama.com/IMAG0134_zps7d7e6736.jpg)
Mikko showed off the food in his mouth (at least it was a willing pose?) …

… and threatened to spray us all with his drink.
Those cheeks are loaded, baby!
At this point, Mikko said, "Do you still have my pirate desk?"
And panic erupted in my chest.
The day before I'd been to a local toy store and seen a lap desk on the clearance table. There was only one, and it was pirate-themed and really cute. I thought, "Hey, Mikko loves sitting on the couch and working on his puzzle magazines.
Maybe he'd like this lap desk."
I went back and forth about it but finally grabbed it since it was the last one.
And … he loved it! He's usually blasé about presents I get him (telling me in how many ways they're the wrong thing — yes, we're working on his gift-receiving scripts), but he used the lap desk all that day, brought it to bed with him, and then insisted we lug it along with us downtown so he could show his friends.
I knew that was a bad idea. I knew I'd end up carrying it, and that I had enough to deal with as it was with a diaper bag, a one-year-old, and a bad back.
I thought about it. The last time I'd seen it was when we first went to the science center and played with the water features outside and we'd set it down on a bench. Could it still be there? Would someone have taken it to lost and found if not?
Or … gulp … just taken it home with them?
Mikko bravely reassured me, "It's ok if it's not there, Mama."
But I knew it wouldn't be ok at all.
We raced (as quickly as a woman hobbled over in pain, a five-year-old, and a toddler way past his naptime can race) back to the science center, showed our card, and rushed down the stairs.
Was it … was that red speck … ?

It was still there!
I know that was quite possibly the most underwhelming story ever, but it seriously made my day. I'd been getting quite cranky with my back pain and all, so to have the lap desk restored to us just upped my happiness back up to full.
![Wordless Wednesday: Science & lapdesks == Hobo Mama p-patch urban garden on roof of parking garage - pacific science center outing downtown seattle center unschooling](http://images.hobomama.com/IMAG0147_zps68cf5c11.jpg)
We headed back, and I thought this was an interesting urban gardening sight to pass — a parking garage with a P-Patch called "UpGarden" on the roof. (That sign on the side of the building points the way.) P-Patches are the community gardens in Seattle, and I thought this location was likely the coolest one.

Back past the ground fountain outside McCaw Hall and off toward home …

What a fun day! I love places like that. I took my boys to the Science Museum in Boston recently and we had a fun time there, too.
Looks like an amazing time!!
great shots! :)

I'm so glad you found the desk! And I'm sorry we didn't get to hang out while we were there.
Hello there,
I think I would have cried if I missed those butterflies. LOL
Lord Byron indeed! I love those locks.
