Sunday Surf: Cosleeping safety

Welcome to the Sunday Surf! Here are some of the best links I've read this past week.

You might want to read these links starting from the bottom and working your way toward the top. They're an unfolding of responses to the recent attacks on cosleeping in Milwaukee. There were other good ones out there as well, but here are a few highlights.

  • "The voices expressing the positives of cosleeping, safe cosleeping, are few and quiet. It is time for these voices to be united and heard. Please consider joining Monkey Butt Junction for the Safe Cosleeping Blog Carnival on December 15, 2011.

All posts should be submitted no later than December 8, 2011."
  • Common Sense and Cosleeping | Tales of a Kitchen Witch

I really appreciated this take on cosleeping that points out the dangers are related tounsafe and unthinking cosleeping. Joni Rae takes us through the stats and facts.
  • Cosleeping Under Attack in Milwaukee. Again. | Monkey Butt Junction

I often compare cosleeping dangers to the dangers of riding in a car. For babies, riding in cars is far more dangerous than anything else. It’s the leading cause of death from 1-34 (I think I remember!). But no one says: Don’t ride in cars. Instead, we say, Here’s how to do it as safely as possible. Because people aregoing to ride in cars, and they are going to cosleep. Better to give them the tools to do it safely than try to coerce and shame them into not doing it at all.

Co-sleeping was something that we hadn't planned to do, but when the time came it just felt so natural to have my baby right by my side. By the time baby #2 came co-sleeping was the only option and I have never felt like I made a mistake, now that my babies are 4 and 7, they still crawl into bed with with us if they wake in the night, I wouldn't have it any other way. I always believed that if you do what feels natural and right in parenting then you can't be making a bad decision. I even switched pediatricians when the first one told me I would kill my baby by co-sleeping... this was after delivering my baby in a hospital that was totally supportive of co-sleeping and never tried to take my baby out of my bed while we were there.
