Wordless Wednesday: Natural learning

Mikko's engineering — it all even rotated!

Baby doodles at nine months

We've instituted a new bin-a-day system. Each bin has a good mix of toys both teeny (vehicles, action figures) and larger (cash register, children's computer), as well as activity bags and puzzle books. We have dedicated bins for dress-up, crafts, and dolls. (Read more about the system here.)

Bathtime can't be confined to only when clothes are off! Alrik, here at nine months, was SO SAD that day that I pulled him out of the bathtub he was sharing with Mikko and got him into his nightshirt. As soon as I let go of him, he crawled at lightning speed back into the bathroom, pulled himself up to standing, and began splashing merrily with the toys again from the edge.

Mikko insisted on having a carnival at home. He and Sam manufactured a setup out of cardboard boxes. Alrik rocked at the balloon toss, though I think he's technically cheating. Hmm…I wonder what those balloons remind him of…

This is Mikko's carousel horse, taped to a dowel. He was only sad they couldn't figure out a way to build a REAL carousel indoors. He's not one to be content with imagining. Maybe he'll devise a way around that someday soon!

Piggy bank craft!

Mikko's enjoying learning about money: counting, math, U.S. history.

Sensory play in a bento box!

Reading the map at the zoo

Checking out the penguins — and each other!

Flying through the Museum of Flight

Sam has proven he reads my Sunday Surfs by permitting me to look into getting a hedgehog (manifesting works!) and pledging to teach me how to play chess. He practiced here with an apter student.

We've been going to the beach daily. Here we were looking at tiny fish jumping through the water.

And this is how we go grocery shopping.

Well, obviously.

I don't know, Lauren; this learning looks suspiciously like fun to me.

I really think you need to find a way to make learning more fun. What a boring family ;-)

Lauren, we have the exact same baby sweater Alrik is wearing in the balloon pic! Too crazy since mine is vintage! I had to content on it. :)

Wow, what a genius idea with that bin system! Now, if my kid wasn't so interested in bins...

@Kellie Barr: That is so fun! It's a sweater my mom knitted for Mikko when he was a baby. I wonder if it's the same pattern.

@Rachael: Ha ha ha! Shh … that's supposed to be a secret.

I also love your idea of a toy/activity box to rotate daily, I will be giving it a go with my 2year old very soon for sure!
Always good to be reminded how much there is to learn from the simple things in life. Natural learning rocks! :)
