Giveaway: Fresher skin with Dove VisibleCare Toning Body Wash = $500 spa gift card! {8.22; US}

Dove Visible Care Toning Body WashI recently had a chance to review a bottle of Dove® VisibleCare™ Crème Body Wash of the Toning variety. The body wash assures me that within a week of use, I will have visibly more beautiful skin from a body wash, which sounded like a good thing to try.

Dove says this premium body wash is designed to help promote skin's elasticity and strength. The unique formula — with Dove's highest concentration of NutriumMoisture and added Vitamin E — contains skin's natural building blocks to help improve its look over time.

The body wash is very thick, almost lotiony, but it lathers up really well on a shower pouf. It felt luxurious and moisturizing going over my skin but rinsed cleanly and easily. Having such a deluxe body wash gliding over my skin, I did have a sense of that spa experience, considering I was alone (heaven!) in the shower, which is about all the me-time a mama of little ones can hope for in a week, right?

It was so nice and thick a lather that I could use it as a shaving cream, so I did, in my usual desultory summer shaving routine. (I shave what I feel like, when I think of it.) The lather kept my skin smooth and comfortable.

One thing that was odd to me was how strongly the wash was scented. I've gotten used to more organic and natural products, and the fragrance here was nearly overwhelming. However, I could see it being a plus to those who like a sort of aromatherapy experience in their shower.

Once I dried off, I couldn't smell the scent on my skin anymore. Mikko's our resident sensitive-nose sniffer. If he doesn't like a scent I'm wearing (like my herbal lotion), he will tell me, in no uncertain terms: "Ugh! Mama, you SMELL." So I knew he was the right person to give my arm a sniff test: "Smells like nothing," was his conclusion. I think that's a good thing if you would have any competing scents from other products you're using, to know that the fragrance will dissipate after your shower is over.

There are some ingredients in the body wash I'm not certain about. EWG's Skin Deep database has no information about this product in particular, and limited information about Dove products in general. The products they do mention run anywhere from a 2 to a 9 for safety, with ingredients in certain products listed as higher risk. Another variant in the VisibleCare line, Renewing, was awarded a 4, with a few ingredients singled out as problematic (not surprisingly, fragrance being one of them). Still, a 4 is an acceptable score for a brand-name product, though I'd love to see the more questionable ingredients substituted out (perhaps essential oils in place of the fragrance?). I'm not overly protective about those ingredients for myself once in awhile, but I do tend to choose products with mostly natural ingredients, particularly for my children. I'd love to see Dove prioritize natural ingredients and perhaps create a separate line for natural products. I think their company values would fit well with a natural line.

Speaking of Dove's company values, one reason I was so excited to promote a Dove product was the work the company has done to show real women and real beauty. Their advertising campaigns showing women of different ages, skin tones, sizes, and looks has been very inspiring to me. It's so striking and unusual to see models who look like — well, me! — as well as like other women I know and admire. I've been impressed that they've stuck with those priorities as their self-described social mission rather than letting it be just a phase in their advertising campaigns. I appreciate the work they're doing to promote high self-image and body esteem among girls (find a tool kit here). Heaven knows we could all use a boost to our confidence!

Ok, but … "visibly more beautiful skin"? Did I get it? Honestly … I don't know. My skin looks good, no question. But I don't know if it looks more toned. I'm not even sure what "toned" skin looks like. Is my skin doing tiny push-ups? I don't think this product is promoted primarily to women with saggy skin, but maybe that's the idea behind toning?

At any rate, my skin has felt pleasantly moisturized (without extra moisturizer applications) and soft to the touch. Even my elbows and knees, which is great now that it's time for sleeveless tops and shorts! I think even my feet are a little softer, perfect for sandals. So I guess if my skin looked dry before in places, it probably doesn't now. So … there you are! Visibly more beautiful skin. Oh, Dove. You got me.
