I was very interested in trying out play silks with my kiddos, so I went to Etsy. On the recommendation of a friend, I checked out BirchLeaf Designs and was instantly enchanted by what I saw. As the tagline puts it, their shop is filled with "whimsical wood & fabric playthings."

As I read more about the store, I was even more impressed:

If you take a look in their shop, you will be struck by the beautifully vibrant colors of playsilks available. I was drawn to the earthtones, but they offer rainbow and pastels as well, so you're sure to find colors your kids connect with and ones they can transform imaginatively into any natural element.

I love the handcrafted wooden products as well: daggers, shields, and leather sheaths; fun chunky play clips that would be the perfect accessory for building playsilk forts; and Waldorf-inspired paint jar holders.

Creative play with playsilks

I was thrilled to open up our package of playsilks. Can you tell who else was? Alrik wore his cape so happily!

These silks are vibrantly and beautifully dyed — I love the rich green and plum colors! I chose the dark purple since it's Mikko's favorite color, and the deep green since it lends itself to natural play.

The size is just right — generous while simple for kids to manage. The silk material makes them feather-light and easily manipulated into any shape or fluttering fancy.

We've already used ours as capes and peek-a-boo props, and I asked some friends on Facebook the creative ways their kids use theirs. Playsilks can be flags, doll slings, skirts, blankets, and wigs. They can be used to represent water or lava or grass or the walls of a house. Playsilks are one of those open-ended toys that inspire kids to make up their own stories and find their own uses, and I love that!
