Last night, we were out training for our Kids Marathon, and on our way back we were passed by the little parks department truck that patrols the beach.
Mikko was fascinated. He ran to keep pace with the truck as it made its way slowly down the sidewalk, stopping sometimes so the man inside could pick up trash with his grabber.
We started talking to the man and ended up exchanging names and information about our families and weekend plans. (Mikko also wanted to get his phone number, but I dissuaded him from being too forward.) I was so happy that the worker was so kind and patient with a five-year-old who thought he had the coolest job ever.
The guy took in furniture that beachgoers had left behind — tonight it was a trash can and a $30 folding table (I know, because we have the same one in our office). He transported it to the local office at the playground (with Mikko and me, yes, racing behind the whole way!), where stuff stays until either someone claims it or it goes forward to Goodwill. I really wanted to ask if we could have the table for an upcoming party but found the strength to resist asking to purloin someone's lost item.
We discovered the man and his coworker would be putting out the beach fires at 10:30 p.m. with the buckets of water in the back of the truck, so of course we had to wait around till that happened!
The picture is Mikko dancing with glee as the flames of another fire pit were extinguished, sending up a plume of smoke for him to frolic through. One of the partygoers at a site inquired, just out of curiosity, "Why is that little kid here?" Good question, but there was a good answer, too.
As we walked back home to bed, finally, Mikko said, "I'm full of energy, Mama! I could keep running all night. I have 100 percent energy!"
That's what a good PE session followed by a field trip will do for you.
