Wordless Wednesday: Breastfeeding mural

I spotted this Japanese mural in McCaw Hall in Seattle
and couldn't resist sharing the corner!
Don't you love the twiddling detail?

Artist: Roger Shimomura; Title: Kai-Dan
Thank you to Tabetha, Greta, & Brie!
(Here's an interesting note on what kaidan means,
and here's a short artist bio.)

You'll love this week's roundup of pictures on the topic of "Natural Parenting Philosophies" over at Natural Parents Network. It was a challenging topic to represent pictorially, but our readers stepped up with some cuties!

That is a crazy mural - lots of fighting going on and the child who is breastfeeding just kind of stands out amid all the chaos.

@Cakeblast Totally! It's like they and the mother-child pair to the far right, where she's feeding him from some sort of bowl, are the only serene ones. I keep thinking that naked (I think?) lady toward the right who's pointing to the couple is on the phone telling someone about their affair.

All the sides to life are present. Chaos, love, danger and the safety of a mother's breast. Very interesting find!

Wow, there is so much going on in that one. I love the peacefulness of the nursing baby amidst the chaos.

that is a wonderful mural...I wonder how many people actually notice the breastfeeding

The mural says so much! It's natural and can happen anywhere/place! Love it!

I don't even know if I would have noticed the mama in the midst of all that chaos!

I love it! I have a blog that is mostly about breastfeeding.

All of the other parts of the mural look very tormented and upset. Not my idea of breastfeeding at all. I loved sharing that time with The Dudes.

That's funny, I totally didn't notice the mama on the right hand side either until someone else pointed her out. I love Japanese artwork...

There is a whole lot going on in that one picture.

I agree, I wouldn't have noticed unless I really looked!

Cracks me up about the twiddling!
Interesting that she seems so peaceful about it, I usually hear how much it drives everyone crazy and how much they hate it.
My little one hasn't started that yet, so we will see if I can handle it as gracefully as this woman seems to! Haha.

Anyone else notice the woman with a saucer of milk on the other side? Hmmm.

That's really beautiful. I'm so glad you shared it.

We have PNB season tickets and I've admired this mural too! I also like the twiddling detail which seems to speak either to a female artist or a culture much more supportive of breastfeeding. I don't know too many men who are aware of that particular... joy of breastfeeding, heh.

that is a lot of things going on! I might of missed the nursing babe. looks like a mix of old Japanese art with a bit of new cartoonish features, very interesting, and can seem to tell a crazy story!

The artwork is called Kai-Dan and the artist is Robert Shimomura.

Brie said...

@Tabetha
A quick Google search suggests it's actually Roger Shimomura, but I never would've gotten that without the initial tip, so thanks!

@Michelle @ The Parent Vortex I wonder how many pass and never notice. And it gets me wondering... in the hustle and bustle of life, how many pass a breastfeeding mom and baby and never actually see them.

Twiddling?! OMG, there is a name for this! My son never did this, but my daughter does constantly. So incredibly funny to catch this detail and then learn that there is an actual name for this little OCD action, ha ha. No, it's darling- but it does catch people at the grocery store a little off guard!

Thanks for posting the mural picture- so wonderful to see an artist capture the sincere soothing experience of Blissful Mama and Baby nursing.
