Sunday Surf: Happy fireworks!

Well, now, see, I got entirely too ambitious this week. I should really still be dialing it down. I thought I'd engineer a new way to highlight natural parenting blog carnivals and natural parenting giveaways (read on to find out how!) and got overwhelmed halfway through and took a nap. So it's not currently Sunday anymore. But let's let that pass, shall we?

Welcome to the Sunday Surf! Here are some of the best links I've read this past week.

My aunt sent me this quote this week. I'm not usually much for flag-waving or email forwards, but this made me happy.

"You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism."

Looking forward to future naptimes. I'm going to have to concentrate on #2 (persistence) & #3 (staying cool) of these tips!
Whether you’ve made a conscious decision to practice attachment parenting or you fell into it by following your instincts, there comes a time when your newborn baby starts to grow out of that newborn stage and begins to settle into

Love this birth story of twins who refused to be induced & sectioned. :)

All birthing mamas deserve a gold star!

Brittany at Mama's Felt Cafe has created a range of felt magnets to celebrate our birth accomplishments, whatever they are!
"After a recent conversation with a friend about her home birth, she jokingly insisted that she wanted her proverbial 'gold star' for having a natural birth. I (half) jokingly told her I would make her one out of felt. After I made the Home Birth Super Star magnet, I expanded to several other designs."
She's designed a reward magnet for everything from VBACs to breech births (with cute little buns!) to twin births to c-sections. I joked that I needed a surprise unassisted water birth magnet, and my wish was her command, as you can see! (You can buy them in her Etsy store, fyi! I lucked out in that she's sending me the one I inspired.)

Breastmilk sharing

I'm honored to host a guest post from Amy of Anktangle on how to handle mom-to-mom milk sharing — tips to hammer out expectations and avoid donor burnout. I am taking her advice to heart as I've started once again pumping and freezing milk to donate. (You can also see a guest photo post of Amy's gracious prenatal visit to the hobo household!)

At the end of the post is a plea for breastmilk donations for Tania Shook, a woman in Wisconsin who had to wean her baby daughter so Tania could receive treatment for cancer. Please, if you or someone you know in the Wisconsin area or thereabouts can donate expressed milk, get in touch with Tania through her Facebook page, or email Elizabeth at Mum & Roo, who can help coordinate the donation.

If you're a blogger, please link up your posts on breastmilk sharing to the linky. You can also grab the blog hop code to place on your own blog. It will update automatically with everyone who links up.

Blog blurb to copy/paste:

And please get the word out about Tania's need on Facebook and Twitter and particularly to any friends you have in the Wisconsin area. Thanks!

Carnival round-up

Exciting news! (I think.)

I've created a linky page for blog carnivals of relevance to natural parents: Natural parenting blog carnivals

You can enter upcoming carnivals to the list, or take note of the submission deadlines so you can write in community with likeminded parents.

Submissions to the linky are moderated (to make sure carnivals are relevant) and will be removed as the live dates pass so it will keep (mostly) up to date.

Here are a couple highlights from the list:
Carnival of Natural Parenting -- Hobo Mama and Code Name: Mama
  • After a month off for the babymoon, the Carnival of Natural Parenting is back for July! Tell us your parenting philosophy. You have the rest of this (long, for some) weekend to write up your take on parenting. Submissions are due this Tuesday, July 5.
  • All this week, Natural Parents Network is hosting the Freedom of Cloth ”freedomcarnival to celebrate cloth diapering. Look for my submissions this week right here on this blog! I'll be talking prefolds and wool and offering a fun giveaway for dryer balls.
Go check the Natural parenting blog carnivals linky page for more upcoming carnivals, and be sure to add the ones you know about!

Giveaways!

Along the same lines as the blog carnival page, I've created a new ongoing linky for natural parenting giveaways.

There are always bloggers — friends of mine — who want to draw attention to their natural parenting giveaways, and I wanted to offer an easy way for them to do it. Instead of being lost in the bigger giveaway linky lists, jumbled in with products that don't speak to our lifestyles or values, your giveaways can shine in this list tailored to attachment parents interested in a natural lifestyle. It will also help highlight the "little-guy" prizes: products from WAHMs and Etsy shops, self-published books, and unique and niche offerings.

If you're a natural parenting blogger and are hosting a giveaway, enter it in the linky!

And if you're a natural parent, go check out the full list of giveaways to see what you can win!

FYI, there's also a new Facebook page for giveaways by parenting bloggers created by Jennifer of Hybrid Rasta Mama. Go check it out! If you "like" the page, you can promote your own giveaways there as well or find out about new ones.

Anyhow, some of our current giveaways! Three end THIS WEEK, the first of which is NEW with a very tight turnaround!

You can find more shared items during the week at my public Google Reader recommendations feed.

Check out Authentic Parenting, Baby Dust Diaries, Navelgazing, Momma Jorje, I Thought I Knew Mama, Enjoy Birth, A Domesticated Woman's Adventures (various), Fabulous Mama Chronicles, Kelly Hogaboom (Fridays), The Parent Vortex (weekends), Ichigo Means Strawberry, TouchstoneZ, Hippie Housewife (Saturdays), Multiple Musings, Motherhood Moments, Mama and Baby Love, and A Little Bit of All of It for more Sunday Surfing! (If you also participate in a regular link list, whether on Sunday or not, let me know and I'll add your link.)

Feel free to add your recommendations in the comments. Happy reading!
